Yachad Summer Programs Spotlight
Yachad @ Camp Mesorah

Yachad runs nearly 30 different Summer Programs, spanning from the West Coast, to Middle America, up and down the NorthEast and Canada, and of course a handful in Israel too. Each newslettter this summer we will feature a program, looking this week at the Yachad Program at Camp Mesorah in Upstate New York.

Camp Mesorah, located in the Upstate New York town of Guilford, is the home to a Yachad Vocational Program as well as a Yachad Camper Integration Program. The tens of participants in this large-scale program love their staff, peers and camper friends. Many having proudly called it their Summer Home for years. One such young women was Chani Rubin, a proud member of the Vocational Program in Yachad at Mesorah, as well as an active participant in New Jersey Yachad programming for many years. Unfortunately, Chani passed away last summer and has been missed by all, including her many friends at Camp Mesorah. To honor her memory, Camp Mesorah & Yachad team dedicated their annual 5K run to Chani’s memory, a touching tribute and means for us to carry on her legacy forever.

Yachad Spotlight - Jakob Skolnick
Jakob Skolnick is an Advisor for New York Yachad and will be starting the Mt. Sinai Accelerated Nursing program this Fall

Avi Feder: What was your introduction to Yachad?
Jakob Skolnick: I believe my first official introduction to Yachad was on a Hillcrest Shabbaton my second year of college. My cousin Josh Kazovitz was a coordinator at the time and one shabbos I decided to give it a try. Since then, I slowly became more and more involved in Yachad.

Avi: What is the next Yachad program you are looking forward to?
Jakob: Looking forward to some great shabbatons this year, in the Ny / NJ area and beyond, and seeing my new friends I met this summer on Yachad Getaway since those campers end up on a lot of Shabbatons!

Avi: Have you ever done Yachad outside of your local NY / NJ area?
Jakob: Yes, in Boston & Los Angeles.

Avi: Have you ever done Yachad outside of your local NY / NJ area?
Jakob: Summer of ’17 I was counselor on Yad B’Yad which is awesome to be in Israel and awesome to be with Yachad so that’s just great all around, and this summer I was a counselor on Yachad Getaway!

Avi: What is your favorite part of a Yachad Shabbaton?
Jakob: I really enjoy meeting new people. Also I’m a big fan of the singing at the meals (especially the chicken nugget song and Yonah Motza). I’ve also come up with new endings to the end of Yonah Matzah, like the Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall, and I made a new one.

Avi: Like what?

Jakob: Oh, it’s great, Lemme get it for you…. OK, ready:

In a Sing Song voice:Who lives in a pineapple under the sea; Absorbent and yellow and and porous is he. If nautical nonsense is something you wish; Then hop on the deck and flop like a fish. Yonah Motzah Voh Manoach, aye aye aye…

Avi: Can you send me a voicenote of you singing this and we’ll post it in the Whatsapp group?

Jakob: Coming your way as soon as we’re done!

Avi: What is your favorite Shabbos food?
Jakob: Gonna have to go with potato kugel, sorry cholent, I apologize.

Avi: Why the apology?

Jakob: I feel like potato kugel and cholent have a little competition so its owed an apology. Some people like cholent more, but it’s not for me.

Avi: What is your favorite Yachad swag item?
Jakob: The orange Yachad socks I got in Boston. Bring them with me on almost every Yachad event I go to. Also bring them anywhere I think there will be color war using the color orange.

Avi: What’s something we wouldn’t have known but is a hidden talent of yours?
Jakob: I can beat box a little bit.

Avi: Can we get a voicenote of that as well. It’s perfect for this, acapella music in the 9 days.

Jakob: I was thinking of going with Ukule and Harmonica, and even some Guitar, but some people say it's not as cool.

Avi: I expect voice-notes of those after Tisha Baav as well.

Avi: Can you tell us about your personal highlight of Yachad involvement?
Jakob: All the great friendships I’ve made with so many different awesome people from the Yachad Shabbatons I’ve been on, to Yad B’yad, and Yachad Getaway. That’s something I can take with me for the rest of my life.

Avi: Before we’re done, what’s one fun fact about you?
Jakob: When I went to Thailand this past January break I hugged a tiger.

Avi: Can we get a picture of that?

Jacob: Go check out my WhatsApp picture – it’s me roaring at a tiger.
